Founded in 1967, the Denver Nuggets have etched their name into the annals of basketball history. As a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), the team initially played in the Denver Auditorium Arena before moving to the Metropolitan Pavilion for a brief period and finally settling in the McNichols Sports Arena and the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets have undergone numerous changes in ownership, management, and identity over the years, but their commitment to excellence and passion for the game remains steadfast. The team’s origins can be traced back to the early 60s, when they were known as the “Tennesseers” and played in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) league. After winning the 1964 AAU championship, the team moved to the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), where they became the “Rockets.” The Rockets went on to compete in the Eastern Professional Basketball League (EPBL) in 1967 before transitioning to the newly formed ABA. In 1967, Eugene & Thomas Chapleau, brothers from Denver, purchased the Rockets and moved them to the Mile-High City. The team became the “Denver Rockets,” reflecting their newfound home. After Texas’s Houston team protested the use of the name, the Rockets were rebranded as the “Denver Nuggets,” a nod to Colorado’s significance in the gold rush era. The Nuggets’ early years in the ABA were characterized by daring plays, relentless competition, and unforgettable moments. As one of the premier teams in the league, they amassed a multitude of fans both in Denver and across the nation, thanks to their dynamic and exciting style of play. During their time in the ABA, the Nuggets featured some of basketball’s most prominent stars, including David Thompson, Bobby Jones, Bobby Wilkerson, and Byron Beck, among others. These athletes notched numerous accolades throughout their careers, cementing their place in basketball lore. Among the many memorable moments from the ABA era, David Thompson’s slam-dunk contest performance at the 1976 All-Star game stands out.
